Description

What is a 39SF010 Programmer?

It is a RomWriter

Is it like a 39SF040 Programmer

Yes. This is a clone of the 39SF040 programmer, but with firmware for programming a 39SF010 chip

What does it do?

It writes Orton3C.rom files to 39SF010 ROM

What else does it do?

That’s it. The 39SF010 Programmer just writes ROMs

Why is there a Dump button?

Ok, it can also dump a 39SF010 ROM to micro SD card.

What else does it do?

That’s it. It just writes ROMs and dumps ROMs

What format does the file need to be?

It needs a 128k file called “Orton3C.rom” This is a binary ROM image file

How long does it take?

Around 1 minutes to erase / program / verify. Under a minute to dump.

Can I program other chips with it?

No. It just writes to 39SF010 chips. If you want to use other chips, you will need a universal EPROM programmer

Can I send data to it over UART?

No. It only reads the Orton3C.rom file from micro SD

Does it need to be assembled?

All of the surface mount components are assembled and programmed.  Only the through-hole components (ZIF socket, OLED screen, header pins) need to be soldered)

Why is this supplied with a ZIF socket?

Unlike the 39SF040 Programmer which might only be needed once a year, it is expected that you will be reprogramming your Orton 3C a lot more often. A Zero Insertion Force socket makes this a lot easier and less stressful for the chip legs.

Why is it green?

So that you don’t mix it up with the blue 39SF040 Programmer.

What operating system do I need to use this?

Any operating system that can write a file to SD card can be used. Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iPhone, BSD, Haiku etc.

Why is it so cheap?

Because it is optimised to just this one thing.

But what if I want it to…?

You’ll need a universal EPROM programmer.

Why did you create it?

The Orton 3C has a ROM Module with some basic routines on it. Unlike other RC2014 kits, there is likely to be a need to update this chip frequently if developing software for the Orton 3C. Because this process had already been solved with the 30SF040 Programmer for RomWBW it was just a firmware change and silkscreen update to make this work with the 128k ROM on the Orton 3C.

Where can I get the Orton3C.rom file I need to program my ROM

Most IDEs can output a binary file which you simply need to rename as “Orton3C.rom”. If your IDE only outputs .ihx or .hex files then you will need to use a HEX2BIN utility or online converter first.

I have an EPROM programmer. Why do I need this.

You don’t. Although depending what programmer you have, or what the support is with your operating system of choice, you may find this quicker and easier.

Does it come with an SD card?

No. You will need to use your own Micro SD card
