Description

This is the full kit to build a Tynemouth Minstrel 4th computer, you just need to supply a case and optionally a keyboard.

The Minstrel 4th is a Z80 based 8 bit computer which is compatible with the Jupiter Ace. It has 49K of RAM with improved composite video output.

The PCB is the same form factor as the ZX81, so could fit in an original ZX81 case and use the original (or a modern replacement) membrane. (note the video out connector is in a different place on the TS1000, so those cases are not suitable without modification). You can also build it as a standalone computer with a membrane stuck to a perspex baseplate or with the optional tactile switch keyboard.

The Minstrel 4th has a single RC2014 expansion slot which is compatible with many RC2014 expansion modules such as the Digital I/O Module, 68B50 Clocked Serial Module, Joystick Module etc. A Backplane 5 can also be added if you want to add more than one module.

A USB Keyboard / FTDI Serial Module designed specifically for the Minstrel 4th by Peacock Media is also available. Note that this unit is supplied fully built and tested.

Software

There are four ROM options included:
  • Original Forth ROM for best compatibility with the Jupiter Ace
  • Patched Forth ROM with additional utilities and serial save load (requires RC2014 68B50 serial card)
  • ZX80 integer BASIC modified to run on Minstrel 4th hardware
  • ZX81 floating point BASIC modified to run on Minstrel 4th hardware (includes fast/slow mode)

The BASICs are still experimental. They are fairly compatible and most things do work. Due to the hardware differences, however, any programs that have their own video routines for pseudo-high-resolution graphics modes or fancy loaders will not work.

This listing is for the full kit of parts to build the Tynemouth Minstrel 4th. This kit includes the PCB, IC pack, and component pack.

The optional keyboard pack which includes the mounting hardware is recommended.

The other optional expansion modules represent a saving over buying the modules individually, but are not required to fully enjoy your Minstrel 4th.
